Positive practice

Our approach

Three things shape every interaction at Little Munchkins: the language we use, the warmth we bring to it and the curiosity we inspire. Positive interactions promote positive outcomes.

Expansive language

We use language that opens conversations up rather than closing them down — narrating play, introducing ambitious vocabulary, building on what a child already knows and giving them real time to think and reply.

  • "Tell me about…"
  • "I wonder…"
  • "How could we…?"
  • "What do you think?"

Positive interactions

Warm, responsive and respectful exchanges — connection before correction, a calm and clear tone, and following the child's lead. When children feel heard and respected, they're far more willing to cooperate.

  • Connection first
  • Calm & clear
  • Respect is shared
  • Child at their level

Childhood curiosity

We encourage our children to explore the world around them, opting for predominantly real-world objects in play, emulating a true “home-from-home” environment.

  • Home-from-home
  • Freedom to explore

What we are working towards

Our curriculum

Four learning goals shape everything we plan and every interaction we have. They run right through the setting, from the Daisy Room, through to Daffodil Room, to the day a child leaves us for school.

Goal 1

To be active members of our community and environment

To know that we are part of a community and have a responsibility to care for the people, animals and environment around us.

By the time children leave us

They know the places and people in their local area, can talk about how we help each other, and take responsibility for caring for living things and our environment.

Goal 2

To be confident and adventurous learners

To be willing to try new experiences, challenge ourselves, develop resilience and learn to manage appropriate risks.

By the time children leave us

They approach new experiences with excitement, keep trying when things are tricky, and can recognise and manage everyday risks.

Goal 3

To feel secure in our feelings and opinions, and to respect the feelings and opinions of others

To develop confidence in who we are and the choices we make, and understand how to build kind, respectful and positive relationships with others.

By the time children leave us

They feel proud of who they are, can express their feelings and choices in their own way, and treat others with kindness and respect.

Goal 4

To know how to stay healthy and well

To understand how we can look after our bodies and minds through healthy food, physical activity, personal hygiene, rest, emotional wellbeing and keeping ourselves safe.

By the time children leave us

They have built healthy routines and habits, and understand why those matter in staying healthy and safe.
